Avatars- Social Studies

This is a lesson that I planned for my class. This lesson was my very first that I have ever planned. The students seemed to really enjoy it. Several students want to make more of the avatars. The avatar lesson branched off of the students’ previous lesson. Previously the students had been learning about the continents for their Social Studies unit. This unit involved the students creating a continent book with all the continents. The students had to draw the continent, write down a few animals, and two facts about each continent.

The Avatar Lesson (My Lesson)

After they were finished with the books, the students had to pick their favorite continent, use their continent books as their resource, and write a paragraph about it. Their instructions for the paragraph were they must have an introduction with their name and the name of the continent that they were doing, two facts about it, an animal that you could find there, and a conclusion statement. Then the students were told to go onto the internet to Voki.com. This is the site that they used to create their speaking avatars. They were only given fifteen minutes to create an avatar that looked like them (well as best as they could). The students then used the paragraph about their continent that they created earlier to make the speaking part for the avatars.

I am very proud of the students for their work on these avatars! I know the typing of the paragraph was not easy for some. The students are so excited to see their speaking avatars so here they are.... :)
